Kirby Vacuum Cleaners - Don't Shoot the Messenger

!±8± Kirby Vacuum Cleaners - Don't Shoot the Messenger

Kirby vacuum cleaners are probably most renowned for the way in which they are sold, and while the door-to-door sales technique may have many critics, it has become the linchpin to the Kirby way of life. If results are anything to go by, the technique has a proven track record with these, but for many consumers it remains a deterrent to purchasing what is arguably one of the most well built cleaners available today.

A quick visit to their website indicates the company's reliance on its sales technique - there are very few details available there about any spare parts, bags or the cleaners themselves. Through the website it is, however, possible to arrange to have a consultant visit your home to display Kirby vacuum cleaners in action. This hands on experience undoubtedly provides consumers with the chance to see for themselves the effectiveness of these machines and to ask the salesman any questions they might have about the cleaner's use or maintenance, including discovering what spare parts are right for you and how often these bags need to be changed.

These salesmen also call unannounced, a trend that some consumers find invasive enough to put them off purchasing what is generally agreed to be a reliable vacuum. Sales techniques are reputed to be rather hard-core on occasion - allegations have been put forth that sales people are advised to target older people who might find it harder to refuse those persistent Kirby vacuum cleaner salesman.

The sales techniques used by them might be controversial, but the quality of the cleaners themselves is not. Though they are expensive and unlike many of their modern counterparts they require the purchase of new bags, these cleaners are built to last a lifetime. And, in fact, with a lifetime guarantee, these are clearly built to last. People might not like the sales technique, but they sure do love the cleaners.

Clean the Ice and Water Dispenser on a Refrigerator Door

!±8± Clean the Ice and Water Dispenser on a Refrigerator Door

The ice and water dispenser on a refrigerator door is a very nice convenience. Over time, the ice and water outlets and the reservoir will get dirty and full of germs. The water reservoir on a refrigerator should be cleaned regularly to keep it clean and germ free. Cleaning the ice and water outlets should also be cleaned to insure it is clean and safe to dispense form. If the water reservoir is allowed stay wet and dirty, it can look and smell terrible. A little skill is needed to clean the outlets and the reservoir. Only safe cleaners should be used to clean the ice and water dispensing parts.

Gather the necessary supplies and get cleaning. White vinegar, a 1 cup measuring cup, a screwdriver, some gray tape and an old toothbrush should get the job done.

The very first thing to do is unplug the refrigerator and turn the water supply to the refrigerator to the off position. Unscrew the screw that is holding the copper water supply tube in place. Slide the copper tube out of position.

Holding the tube upright, pour about 3 cups of vinegar into the tube. Hold the tube over the reservoir to catch any overflow. Leave the vinegar sit for 5 minutes in the tube and the reservoir.

Using grey tape, attach the copper tube to the back of the refrigerator to keep the vinegar draining down towards into reservoir.

Empty the ice dispenser by depressing the ice dispenser lever to expel all of the ice. Let about half of the vinegar flow through to flush out any dirt.

Next, depress the water lever on the water dispenser. This will allow the vinegar to run through the water supply pipes and tubes getting a complete cleaning. Keep the button pressed until all the vinegar has ran through into the reservoir. If the reservoir is small, empty it as it gets full.

Dip a toothbrush into the vinegar in the reservoir. Scrub the spouts that the ice and water flows through with the old toothbrush. Continue scrubbing with the toothbrush. Be sure to clean the entire ice and water dispensing center with vinegar. Pay close attention to the corners of the reservoir.

Remove the reservoir tub. Rinse well in the sink with warm water. Replace.

Place the copper tubing back in its space. If the refrigerator was moved, return it to position. Turn the water supply back on. Run fresh water through the ice and water spouts for a few minutes to rinse all vinegar out.

Domestic and Commercial Dishwashers - What's the Difference?

!±8± Domestic and Commercial Dishwashers - What's the Difference?

Just about every family home will have a dishwasher nestled in some corner, and they are now so popular that they are a staple of modern life. New models of dishwasher are being rolled out almost daily by the big companies like Bosch and Miele, each bigger and better than the last, but how are these different from the commercial dishwasher?

The short answer is that commercial dishwashers are simply better than their domestic counterparts. Ultimately the design of the domestic dishwasher means that it is not designed to even compete with the commercial models. Look at the specifications of the machines. A domestic dishwasher is designed to wash one load of dishes a day for around five years, and while the commercial dishwasher is also designed for five years, it will be able to go through up to thirty washes a day. So how is this achieved? Well, ultimately the domestic machine will have a wash cycle of up to ninety minutes, so it will give very thorough clean. However, the commercial dishwasher will blast dishes for only four minutes. Even so, after thirty washes, the machine will only have been running for half an hour longer than the domestic model.

As it runs for a much greater length of time, the commercial dishwasher has to be incredibly efficient. Therefore each wash will use up around two and a half litres of water, using only eight pence worth of detergent. Compare this to the domestic dishwasher, which tends to use up to thirty-five litres. While the sheer number of washes will make the cost of the detergent mount up, the machine is also very effective at using electricity effectively, costing only eight pence for each wash.

The efficiency of the commercial dishwasher is unquestionable when one considers how many dishes it can clean per hour. With thirty washes an hour, the dishwasher, if loaded fully, will clean up to five hundred and forty plates. The commercial model can only manage thirty six.

However, the commercial dishwasher does have certain specifications and features that must be looked after. It can only run on soft water, so you may well need to invest in an expensive water filter, or risk damaging your machine. Naturally some models are available with a built-in filter, and attachments are readily available. However, they are certainly not cheap. Furthermore, with thirty washes a day, you will be using a large amount of detergent, which will, unfortunately, cost a fair bit.

On the other hand, however, the commercial machine is a boon for ensuring that plates are perfectly clean and sanitary - vital for any catering business. Look at the facts; domestic machines only rinse plates at temperatures of seventy degrees. Commercial machines rinse at an average temperature of eighty-two degrees, eradicating any trace of bacteria. At home it is easy enough to give plates that aren't totally clean a second wash, but in a restaurant, plates need to come out perfectly clean after just one wash.

So it becomes abundantly clear that the commercial dishwasher is a safer, more energy-efficient and cost-effective version of the domestic counterparts. They may be a part of every home, but they are not as well-designed as the commercial model.

Front Load Washers - What's All the Fuss?

!±8± Front Load Washers - What's All the Fuss?

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you've seen more and more front load washers pop up in the last ten years than you could have imagined. Is it just a fad, or some kind of appliance conspiracy? Or could it be that there is more to these machines than meets they eye?

First off, front load washers are much more energy efficient than most top load washers. An average top loader will use between 40 - 45 gallons of water per load, not including an extra rinse cycle. A typical front load washer will use between 12 - 22 gallons of water per load, AND you can usually do twice the laundry in front load washer. Let's be very conservative with the math here. Let's say it takes two loads in a top loader to do one equivalent load in a front loader. That's on a low side 80 gallons of water for the top load washer compared to a high side of 22 gallons for the front load washer - a savings of almost 60 gallons of water! That's not even taking into account how much more efficient front loaders are in extracting water from the laundry before they reach the dryer. By the way, you dryer is the second most energy consuming appliance you own. Saving time in the dryer saves your pocket book, too.

Now for wash quality... Washing machines (front and top load) roll the clothes over to force water and detergent into the fiber of what is being washed, and then to rinse the dirt and detergent back out. We know that a top load washer rolls the clothes over between 4 - 7 times per load. Compare that with a front load with well over a 1000 times per load. Which do you think will wash better? Not to mention that when most top loaders drain water from the wash basket the dirty water filters back through the clothes, whereas front loaders use several rinse cycles and centrifugal force to give you a much more thorough rinse. People with allergies will benefit greatly with the better wash quality a front load washer gives you.

If you use an energy efficient washing machine, make sure you use high efficiency detergent. Because you are using much less water, the detergent needs to be able to break down with less water, too. You can find very good detergents at most appliance dealers. The detergent may cost more than what you'll find at the grocery store, but is well worth the money. It will generally give you a better clean, and you will use much less. Most front load washers filled to capacity won't need more than 2 TABLESPOONS (yes, I said tablespoons!) of HE detergent. Most detergent labels will tell you to use more, but remember they are in the business to sell detergent!

Another great benefit of buying a front load washer - they generally last longer. Brands I like to recommend are in front load laundry are Miele, Bosch, Whirlpool (Maytag - which is a Whirlpool machine), and Frigidaire. If you really want a top loader and want energy efficiency, make sure you check out Fisher & Paykel (makers of the Dishdrawer).

One last thing... Before you go shopping, make sure you know of any dimension limitations you may have. Front load washers are much deeper than the top loader you may have.

How to Clean a Room Quickly Before Guests Arrive

!±8± How to Clean a Room Quickly Before Guests Arrive

If you are expecting guests to your home and need to know how to clean a room quickly, then there are some tricks that you can use to get your clean show room ready before they arrive. Cleaning a room should take no more than fifteen minutes, more or less, depending on the size and furnishings of your room. The instructions below will work for your living room area, a family room, a bedroom, home office, or guest room.

First, gather all of your cleaning supplies so they are convenient. This would include a duster and vacuum, at the minimum. In addition to these tools, you will need an empty container to put all of the items that do not belong and need to be moved into their rightful place. You will not be putting everything away as you clean because you want to clean a room quickly and that will take up too much time. So you will collect all of the random items that you come across and put them into the container, an empty bag or an empty clothes hamper will work.

When you are ready, go through and collect everything that does not belong and put it into your empty container. This will get rid of the clutter and help you clean up faster. Random things would include any toys laying around that do not belong, clothes, knick knacks, games, and other things that need to be stored properly.

Now organize the items that are visible - quickly. Straighten up books, stack magazines neatly, arrange couch pillows and so on. This should take only a few minutes, if that, do not get distracted by the latest magazine you haven't been able to read or anything else.

After that, quickly dust on visible surfaces, this would include the coffee table, end tables, television stand, and other visible surfaces. Do not take the time to take down items in order to dust an entire bookcase, you can do that when you have more time. If you have pets, then you want to make sure that the pet hair is removed from the couch after dusting.

After dusting the visible surfaces, run your vacuum over the carpet or area rugs. This should be your last step after clearing out the clutter, arranging your furnishings, and dusting your visible surfaces. Also when vacuuming, do not take the time to move your furniture or try a new furniture arrangement. You want to quickly run your vacuum over the carpeting and rugs that are visible. When you have more time, you will be able to do a more thorough cleaning.

If you are cleaning a bedroom quickly, then still follow the same steps above, but make sure to make your bed as well. A well-made bed can go a long way in making a room appear clean and clutter-free.

If you have some spare time, you can clean any glass surfaces that look dirty and light a candle to mask any cleaning or pet smells that may be lingering.

After you are done cleaning your room quickly, you can store your container with your room clutter in a separate, hidden place, like in the laundry room or basement. Just remember not to forget it. When the guests leave, then you can take the time to put your random items back into their proper places.
